It is usually viewed as spamming, if you encourage people to visit your site or if your site if off-topic. Leaving helpful and relevant comments may lead to people visiting your site. A trick I use is to use my site name, when I leave a comment on another blog.

Nice post, I have to say that it is a bit scary at first getting a blog up and running, but once you do it once it gets easier and easier. I actually managed to whip up my creative writing jobs blog quite quickly, it's just about following the right steps.
