One thousand dollars for one article . . . you've got to be kidding, right?

Readers will notice the Article Earnings Ticker below. I'm reaching a milestone and am sharing with others, to illustrate what is possible with online writing.  A thousand dollars for one page of material seems incredible but it can materialize.

Now, this will most definitely NOT happen with each article you write . . . but, if you stumble upon a hot topic, which continues to attract readers, you stand to earn a significant amount.

Since, for this particular article, I'm nearing the $1000.00 mark, I thought I would give readers more information about it.

 A Thousand Dollars for One Article--How?

When Was the Article Published?

The article was published in April of 2008 at one of Triond's sister sites. So come this April, it will have been online for four years. If you crunch the numbers, this means that, on average--when I hit the thousand-dollar mark--this page of material will have earned me approximately $250.00 each year, which breaks down to average earnings of $20.83 per month. Not bad for a page that took minutes to create.

Now, a person might be able to earn a one-off payment comparable to $20.83 for one of their articles but . . . that one-off payment starts and ends there. De nada; whereas this little article has churned out this amount each month for nearly four years.

Article SEO

I did my usual regarding article SEO, so this is not, in my opinion, what made this article so hot.

Article Extras

I added 1 photo and 2 videos. It is always a good idea to make an article visually appealing, but again, most of us do this with some of our articles.

Google AdWords Tool Stats

I used two keyword phrases in my article title and this might have been one of the reasons this article did so well. I'm including this data below so that you can use it as a guide when researching and selecting keywords for your online articles. While I won't divulge the actual keywords I used, I will provide the following information.

Keyword Stats

First keyword phrase: Competition: Low    Global Monthly Searches: 27,100    CPC: $ 1.84
Second Keyword Phrase: Competition: Low    Global Monthly Searches: 6,600    CPC: .33

1. CPC: What immediately stands out is that the keywords were not the most profitable cost per click keywords.
2. The Global searches were on target because, as can be seen, they generated traffic but were not overly competitive.
3. I think one of the most important factors as to this article's profitability was that the  competition for my terms was low.

Most Important Step
The MOST important step I took after  wrote this article was that of creating inbound links. (I know, I know, I can hear you groaning already)

The article was already doing well, so about two years ago, I decided to experiment with inbound linking. Now, most people have heard of this and may have taken a half-hearted stab at it, posting the odd link here and there. I took it a little further.

Free Article Directories
I went into the free article directories and created related articles and then pointed links to the original article, using my keyword phrase as anchor text. Now, this may seem like a lot of work: writing additional articles at free directories to earn from one article; however, the effort paid off and the results were astonishing. Once I did this, I saw a huge upswing in both views and earnings, which shows no signs of stopping.

I could have written related articles at paying sites that allow external links but I wanted to see if the free article directories had more clout with the search engines. Turns out they did.

All in All
I hope this post has inspired you to keep writing and working to optimize your online articles to generate higher revenue. While one thousand dollars lifetime earnings for one article may be on the high side, this experience certainly demonstrates that it is possible.
