Choosing Keywords: The Make-or-Break Factor for Views and Earnings

Today's post will discuss choosing keywords for your online content. This is important and can spell the difference between readership and earnings or content that is dead in the water and fails to earn its keep.

Before you write any piece of content, whether it be a blog post, an article, or website copy, the first order of the day should be to sign in to whatever keyword tool you are using and check your chosen keywords before you begin writing. What should you be looking at when selecting your keywords?

Three Factors to Consider When Choosing Keywords
  1. Cost per Click
  2. Search Volume
  3. Competition
Choosing Keywords: CPC
The mother of all earnings potential, cost per click, commonly known as CPC is an important factor to consider when creating your online content. CPC is the amount that advertisers will pay for a chosen keyword and it can make a big difference to your earning potential. Choosing higher CPC keywords for your online content will directly relate to how much you potentially earn. The figures you see are the highest amount someone might pay for a keyword. Even if you were to earn half  that amount, you are still ahead of the game. It should be obvious why choosing higher CPC keywords would stand you in good stead.

Choosing Keywords: Global Search Volume
This is a balancing act. You should choose a term that gets a decent number of searches but not one that gets so many searches that it might be near impossible to rank well for. A broad term might generate millions of searches but if it is widely used, would it serve you well? This is why niche marketing has emerged, as the Internet has become saturated with widely used keywords and gazillions of sites built around similar topics. You may have heard the term "deep niche marketing." With so many competing pages, this is a good concept to keep in mind when reseraching keywords. There are differing opinions about search volume as it relates to keywords, ranging from 1000-130,000 searches as being ideal numbers.

Choosing Keywords: Competition
It is preferable to find a keyword that has low or medium competition. You can see this when studying your chosen keywords.

Tip When Choosing Keywords
Another thing that can make your research so much easier is to sequentially arrange data, when checking keywords. What do I mean by this? When I check CPC, I always select "Sorted by CPC" so that the highest CPC keywords magically arrange themselves at the top of the keyword tool. One can do the same for Global Search Volume, as well. I usually study these two things first and lastly check Competition before I settle on a primary keyword and any secondary/tertiary keywords.

Choosing Keywords: Putting it All Together
Okay so you have found a term that gets more than 1000 searches, that shows "low" for competition, and that has a high CPC. Well done! Now get busy and write an article around that term. You may want to experiment with the numbers for search and see what nets you the best results.

Once you get used to doing it, choosing keywords for your online copy becomes an automatic process, one that is necessary to generating income online.

Money-Making Tip: Find keywords that generate 1000+ searches, higher CPC, and show "low" for competition.
