Week in Review

Hello Everyone!

With the start of a new week, I'm reflecting on happenings last week.

My Week in Review
First up: I had a SKYPE conference with my publisher and we worked out the details for illustration ideas for Bedbug. This is exciting because it means that the book is going forward. It will be great to see the actual hard copy book. I'm still receiving pre-orders and interest remains high.

Second on the agenda: I submitted a number of articles, as I usually do each week, writing for Suite 101, for Triond, for Bukisa and for HubPages.

Third up: I've tried to submit at least 10 Xomblurbs each day. I know that sustained effort pays off, rather than hit-and-miss approaches. I'm trying to get a significant amount of article bookmarks in at Xomba so that my earnings will increase. Xomba is a good spot for writers because they can bookmark their own articles, thus boosting traffic, while earning at the same time.

So, as per usual, it was busy last week. I haven't taken much time off this summer and am hoping that September affords some opportunities to get out-and-about. With the weather cooling down, hopefully, I will be able to enjoy getting some fresh air without grappling with jolts and buzzes, which is the usual state of affairs in the summer months.

Writing for Xomba

Well, after promising myself I would NOT take on more writing work, I've joined Xomba. Why?

As readers will be aware, I have a couple of children's books that are pending publication. I'm working on the third story in the Bedbug series, right now, in fact. I have seven adult novels I want to finish and send out to publishers. I have my regular writing gig with Suite 101 and I write for Triond and Bukisa. Whew! Enough to make your head spin, isn't it? Never mind my blogs or HubPages.

There are never enough hours in the day but . . . Xomba intrigued me. After reading through some of the testimonials I decided that the earning potential was simply too promising to pass up. This morning I read of one lady who has made $82.00 this month with Xomba; I've read other testimonials where "Xombies" have made a couple of hundred. Encouraging or what? So, I'm going for it.

Xomba in a Nutshell

  • You write 50-word blurbs, linking to articles or sites you find interesting. I LOVE the fact that you can do this to promote your own online content!
  • You write 100-word bites. These are easy-to-execute articles, where you can link to your other articles.
Now, the traffic generation alone would make Xomba a worthwhile undertaking but you basically earn for promoting your own work! It doesn't get any better.

Xomba is a writing opportunity that gets three thumbs up!

Where is August Going To?

I told a friend that she could come up and stay this month and we would spend a couple of days going out and about. Hmm . . . the month has gone by in a flurry of activity and still no "out and about."

I thought I would take part of August off . . . but the "off" part somehow stayed "on."

What is it about writing that can just totally submerge you? Does anyone else find this?

I should be enjoying the summer, I should be getting out-of-doors, I should be spending more time with friends. All those shoulds have gone the way of "out and about" and "off."

I know I'm an out and out eccentric--I mean who else drives around in their car with a large orange Cockatoo riding on their head? I did this when I lived in B.C. to echoes of "Oh my God! Look at that!"

These days I have a skunk named Stinky who lives under my back deck. Everyone tells me I must get rid of him . . . I don't have the heart to. Stinky and I have an understanding. I come and go as I please, leave out tidbits for him, and in return, he never raises his tail and never sprays around the house. No one can process this when I tell them.

Anyway, I fear my becoming increasingly submerged is a sign that I'm becoming even more eccentric.

I was going to at least take all of Sunday off. Hmm . . . I received the storyboard for my Bedbug children's book so spent an enjoyable hour going through it and adding information before sending it back to the publisher, I wrote two short articles, and I did some tweaking.

See what I mean? Submerged.

Thoughts on Blogged & Blog Review Widget

I've recently joined the Blogged community and am enjoying looking through and following blogs that catch my fancy.

One of the best features of Blogged is the widgets offered. Specifically, users can review others' blogs, and those bloggers can install a widget displaying their blog's reviews.

I was pleased to see the reviews of Write and Earn a Living--a real shot in the arm. Thanks everyone!

As you join blogging communities, you'll find that certain communities become your favorites. For me, I like ease-of-use and easy site navigation. Blogged offers a good format and in my view is one of the better blogging communities.

I must get busy and join more blog communities. Now, if there was just a clock that offered more than a 24-hour day! (**)

Eating Donuts and Drinking Tea

**)
I'm sitting here today eating donuts and drinking tea. I had a hard time sleeping last night so am running on empty today.

The nice thing about freelance writing is that if you feel "yucky" you can fiddle, over killing yourself at a job you dislike.

Even when I don't feel good, I have to admit that most days, I'm glued to my computer. If you are anything like me, you'll agree that writing is addictive and there's always that paragraph you want to tweak, that article you just want to finish, those lines rattling around in your brain and begging to emerge via your word processor.

My friends think I'm a work-a-holic. Hmm . . . Is loving what you do the same thing?

I tend to work most weekends . . .

I resent having my time taken up with mundane matters . . .

As soon as I'm up and about, I turn on my computer . . .

Hmmm . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . **)

Writing Dribbles and Drabbles

Summer lends itself to some well-deserved time off spent in enjoyable pursuits. I recently had the good fortune to be in the Parrsboro area. Readers who are familiar with this neck of Canada may enjoy Terry's blog: Discover Parrsboro. When I have a few minutes, I curl up with some tea and give her posts a read-through.

As readers will be aware, I've been busy preparing for the launch of my children's book,
The Bedbug Who Wouldn't Bite
copyright Melody Rhodes, 2009. We're working on the cover illustration, at present. I've been writing the next two stories in the series and crunching ideas for a fourth story. Fortunately, I can work in my head so I can still work on these stories if I have to look after other matters.

I've sent out three queries to agents for a concept book. I plan on taking a duel approach with this particular story, sending the synopsis to agents and the manuscript to publishers to see what response I get. Either way, it's all good--as I have an inkling this one will be published, too.

I've had to go on hiatus from my Triond writing so haven't produced daily or weekly articles as I had intended. I have a monthly income amount I'm working towards so still plan on writing for Triond, as time permits. I did manage to produce one article that is getting many responses: Abortion Survivors: Tiny Victims That Beat the Odds.

This month, I plan to get back to my Suite 101 writing. Being under contract, I have to produce a certain number of articles to maintain my author status, so this is one writing gig I can't put on the backburner. I enjoyed researching The Mysterious Nazca Lines of Southern Peru. I've always been fascinated by these geoglyphs that are seen to best advantage from the air.

I haven't had much chance to write for Bukisa; however, 22 people have signed up under me. One writer has produced a prolific 53 articles since joining Bukisa last month. She is working hard to grow ongoing monthly earnings. Mommyfreelancer mentions that she has discovered a love for freelance writing. I believe she will reach her goals.

I mentioned previously that I would keep readers up to speed on how Bukisa was shaping up. I've submitted 19 articles. I planned on submitting far more but, as can be seen, my plate has been full lately. For anyone who wants to earn residual income, a good beginning approach would be to set a goal of 50 articles. This is what I had planned on. I will go back to Bukisa once circumstances permit.

I haven't had much chance to work on my blogs but I spent an evening setting up The Bedbug Blog, so that readers can keep abreast of Bedbug news. I also created a Facebook page so that users can access information at The Bedbug Books page.

I'm trying to set aside time each day to work at some projects around my home that need attention. Struggling with ongoing health issues means that I have to do anything physical in small doses. I can't accomplish as much as I would like but still can see forward progress. Fortunately, freelance writing does not require physical strength.

I've been trying to get back into Silva again and find the induction and different techniques relaxing and effective. Silva is an powerful tool when you need to unwind and destress or change your outlook or circumstances.

Well, that's it--my round-up of recent activities. Let me know if you've enjoyed this posting and have a great summer!
